This image was taken in a Shoe Shop in New York during our visit there over Christmas 2012. The shop assistant who was helping us went up the escalator to find another pair of shoes. When she came down again, the escalator was empty except for her and I took the shot quickly (see the original image below).

I really liked the symmetry, so I cropped the image to a square format to emphasise it.

Following Lens Correction and Transform layers to straighten it all up, I used a Nik Film Efex Vintage 11 filter to give the look I wanted. This was followed by a series of Viveza, Clone, and Paint layers to adjust the lighting to the way I wanted it and to remove distractions. Darken / Lighten centre was the used to make final adjustments to the lighting and, finally the image was sharpened using the Photoshop High Pass Filter.

The image has had 4 international acceptances including the Welsh International Salon (2013), the South Devon Salon of International Photography (2013) and 102nd Southampton International Exhibition (2015)

The Lady in White

This image was taken at Bryant Park in New York on Christmas Day 2012 (see the original image below).

I was taking some candid shots of people skating when I noticed the “Lady in White”. She stood out from the crowd and I just had to try to capture the scene.

Post processing consisted of cropping to my current favourite square format followed by a number of adjustments in Photoshop using both standard Photoshop filters and Nik Filters, notably, Glamour Glow, Darken/Lighten Centre, Viveza, Dark Contrasts, Colourise. All designed to give the atmosphere I wanted in the background and to make her stand out.

It has had 7 International acceptances, including 151st Edinburgh International Exhibition of Photography 2013 (Scotland), the 2013 Welsh International Salon 2013 (Wales), 121st Toronto International Salon of Photography 2014 (Canada), and theTallaght International Salon of Photographic Art 2014 (Ireland).

The second level of The Society’s Distinctions is the Associateship and it is a significant step up from Licentiateship. Candidates need to demonstrate a high standard of technical competence, creative ability and a personal style. The RPS also looks for complete control of the technical aspects of photography. It is awarded in particular categories.

See the RPS Distinctions Page  for more details.

Following the award my LRPS on 28th February 2008, I submitted a panel of 15 images for my Associateship on 19th June 2009.

In addition to the images and hanging plan, a Statement of Intent is required. The hanging plan, Statement of Intent and images in my successful Visual Art panel are displayed below:

This was taken in Yokohama on my trip to Japan in 2010 (see the original image below), at exactly the same place and one minute before A Woman and a Man.

I wanted to create a dreamy, Japanese feeling in the final image.

The original was first straightened then cropped to a square format. The Nik ‘Pro Contrast’ filter was applied, then ‘Darken/Lighten Center’ was applied with the centre positioned near the top right hand corner to lighten the right hand side of the image. This was done 5 times. A layer mask was used on the last two applications to balance the image the way I wanted it. The image was then sharpened using Photoshop ‘High Pass’ filter. Nik ‘Glamour Glow’ was applied and adjustments were made using ‘Viveza’. Finally ‘Bleach Bypass’ was applied and a layer mask was used to bring back some of the detail.

This image has had 12 International acceptances including a Diploma at 47e Challenge du Photo-Club Esch Salon Mondial 2011 and an acceptance in the Royal Photographic Society International Projected Image Exhibition 2010.

The Licentiateship (LRPS) is the first level of distinction, which is open to all members of The Royal Photographic Society (RPS). Non-members may apply but if they are successful, they must then join The Society.

It is awarded either for competence in practical photography, or by passing an appropriate examination in photography recognised by The Society.
See the RPS Distinctions Page for further details.

I joined the RPS in 2006 and was awarded my LRPS on 28th February 2008, following the successful submission of a panel of ten images. The hanging plan and images are displayed below:
